What is a market-cap-weighted index?

Cfefinances

A market-cap-weighted index is one in which each company's weight is proportional to its total market capitalization. Larger companies therefore have a greater influence on the index's performance. The S&P 500 is a common example.
Think about an index where bigger companies count more. Each firm's weight matches its market value — the S&P 500 is a classic example.
